AUGUST 5-7 SAN JOSE MCENERY CONVENTION CENTER & ONLINE

Cosplay Cup FAQs

If you are selected to participate and available to attend in person in San Jose, attendees will be given a complimentary badge to the event. For those participating virtually, you’ll be given more information about how you’ll attend online as we get closer to the show!

Not at all! Crunchyroll-Hime’s Cosplay Cup is open to fans with a Crunchyroll Expo 2022 badge. All written submissions should be in English, and all email correspondence with contestants will be in English. Soundtrack for Finalist performances may be in other languages. However, due to certain restrictions, physical prizes may only be shipped to addresses in the U.S. and Canada.

Yep! Similar to last year, we are allowing both individual entrants as well as groups of up to five eligible competitors. That said, we still expect BOTH individuals and groups to adhere to local health, safety, and social distancing guidelines. If the Crunchyroll-Hime’s Cosplay Cup staff identifies unsafe behavior, it will be grounds for disqualification.

Along with filling out your interest form, the purpose of your pitch portfolio is to go into more detail about what you plan to do for your entry and to show costume progress. The Crunchyroll Expo 2022 Cosplay staff will be using these to determine the Finalists for the show. You don’t need to have your costume done at this point, but you should have at least started. The format is no more than five (5) 8.5″ x 11″ pages in PDF format. It’s due no later than 11:59PM PDT June 5, 2022. After you complete your Group or Individual interest form, you will get a welcome email that includes a guide and sample template. Have fun with it, and we can’t wait to see your ideas!

This is a different document than your pitch portfolio and will ONLY be created by the selected Finalists and alternates. This document is primarily for our judges to see the details of your costume and any notes on your performance you wish to call out. Since we are being safe and cannot do detailed construction judging in person, this should include detailed shots of your construction, highlighting things you would in a traditional in-person construction judging at a cosplay competition. This document should be no more than five (5) 8.5″ x 11″ pages in PDF format and is due no later than 11:59PM PDT July 17, 2022. Group entries may use up to ten (10) pages. Instructions for submission will be emailed to Finalists by the Crunchyroll Expo 2022 Cosplay staff.

Please keep in mind that ONLY the selected Finalists and alternates will need to submit a video, and submitting a video before you are selected as a Finalist will not be accepted.

Finalists will be permitted to record their entry, which should be no longer than one minute in total length, in their home or in an area where it is safe to film according to local health, safety, and social distancing guidelines. Entries recorded where proper safety and social distancing according to local guidelines is not possible will not be permitted. Finalists may use multiple cuts if desired to better show their costume, but the entire performance should take place in one scene/location. Additionally, no excessive filters, deepfakes, green screen/chroma key effects, special effects, or motion graphics will be permitted. Only practical effects, props, and backgrounds will be allowed. Final video should be in full HD, 1920px x 1080px resolution, 16:9 aspect ratio in either .MOV or .MP4 format. Your final entry should be recorded horizontally. If you have any questions, please reach out to crxcosplay@crunchyrollexpo.com before submission.

A couple of reasons for this. We have had a tremendous positive response, from worldwide viewing audiences and cosplayers alike, to the video format. Additionally, this format opens up the competition to folks unable to travel to Crunchyroll Expo in-person. New for 2022, we will offer Finalists who wish to attend Crunchyroll Expo in person an opportunity to come on stage and interact with our judges and emcees during the live show, but this is both optional and not a contributor to the final score.

To keep things fair and equal for all our Finalists, both in-person attendees and virtual participants, we will continue to use the Portfolios + Videos as the basis of judging Crunchyroll-Hime’s Cosplay Cup.

Not at all! We are asking for this to get an idea of your body of work in cosplay, if you have one. And we realize many cosplay enthusiasts choose to put the work into building their cosplay skill more so than their following. The Crunchyroll Expo 2022 Cosplay staff may also use this to cross-check your selected skill level to help ensure fairness. In short, we don’t care about follower numbers—this is about your creations!

No. You just need to have a badge to Crunchyroll Expo 2022 to participate. Contestants under the age of 18 will need to have a parent or guardian’s permission and, if selected as a Finalist, your parent or guardian will need to fill out the required forms should you win a prize.

We’d love to see you cosplay from one of the hundreds of shows and games available from Crunchyroll, but it is not required. This competition is for fan-created costumes based on anime and anime-inspired shows and games and, of course, anything under the Crunchyroll umbrella is fine. If you have any questions on whether your costume idea is appropriate for the show, please contact the Crunchyroll Expo 2022 Cosplay staff via email at crxcosplay@crunchyrollexpo.com and we will reply as soon as we can.

Generally, no. Crunchyroll-Hime’s Cosplay Cup is for fan-created costumes based on anime and anime-inspired shows and games. If you have any questions on whether your costume idea is appropriate for the show, please contact the Crunchyroll Expo 2022 Cosplay staff via email at crxcosplay@crunchyrollexpo.com and we will reply as soon as we can.

No. This is a competition for fan-created costumes, and the costume should be at least 75% made by the entrant(s). Premade items like undergarments, wigs, and shoes are fine, as is help from a parent or member of your household. If your costume is found after submission to have been bought or commissioned and you were selected as a Finalist—it is grounds for disqualification. If you are allowed to compete, your score in the “construction” category (worth 1/3 of your score) will be marked zero. Honesty is the best policy, and we can’t wait to see what you make!

While we’d love to see new creations for this competition, we understand this might not be feasible. That said, if your costume is self-created according to the rules, it is fine to enter with it. To discourage what is known as “sandbagging” in costume competition circles, if your costume has won a major or Best in Category award in competition, you will need to both disclose this and change at least 40% of the costume in order for it to be eligible. If you have any questions or are unsure, please contact the Crunchyroll Expo 2022 Cosplay staff via email at crxcosplay@crunchyrollexpo.com and we will reply as soon as we can.

Yes, you are absolutely welcome to submit your entry for the competition. In virtually all cases, you should select the “Advanced” category for your entry.

This is a special prize awarded by the Crunchyroll-Hime’s Cosplay Cup at Crunchyroll Expo 2022 Cosplay staff and given to one competition participant, who through outstanding organization, communication, and skill most exemplifies the spirit of the competition. We want to reward good citizenship, organization, and detail as well as skill. Through this, the winner will show inherent potential talent for judging and, as a part of the prize, will be invited to be a part of the judging panel for the next Crunchyroll-Hime’s Cosplay Cup. This prize is open to all skill levels.

The Crunchyroll-Hime’s Cosplay Cup at Crunchyroll Expo 2022 Cosplay staff realize it takes a lot of courage to start along the path of becoming a cosplayer, let alone perform for a crowd, which can be quite intimidating! This is a special prize to call out and uplift emerging talent. It is open to participants in the Beginner and Intermediate categories. This prize is for the entry that shows true potential in the world of cosplay. We can’t wait to see them become a true star!
